# Mystic rectangle in astrology: oppositions in balance

> What a mystic rectangle is in a birth chart: two oppositions, two trines and two sextiles, elements and polarity, orbs, how to read it, a worked example.

A mystic rectangle is a configuration of four planets standing at the corners of a rectangle inscribed in the chart wheel. The diagonals of the rectangle are two [oppositions](/en/aspects/opposition). The long sides are two [trines](/en/aspects/trine), the short sides two [sextiles](/en/aspects/sextile). That makes six aspects: two tense and four harmonious. The name took hold in 20th-century English-language astrology and implies nothing mysterious about how the figure is built.

## How the figure is built

Place four points on a circle at 0°, 60°, 180° and 240°. The point at 0° opposes the point at 180°, and the point at 60° opposes the point at 240°. Between 0° and 60° there is a sextile, between 60° and 180° a trine, between 180° and 240° another sextile, and between 240° and 360° another trine. That is a mystic rectangle.

The key property of the figure is that its two oppositions do not cross at right angles, as in a [grand cross](/en/aspects/patterns/grand-cross), but meet at 60°. Each end of one opposition is linked to the ends of the other by soft aspects: a trine to one, a sextile to the other. So the tension of the oppositions is not locked in on itself but keeps finding an outlet through the neighbouring planets.

## Polarity and elements

Sextiles and trines link signs of the same polarity: fire with air, earth with water. Oppositions also link signs of the same polarity. So in a classic mystic rectangle all four planets sit in signs of one polarity.

- **An active rectangle** sits in fire and air signs. Its two oppositions might link, for example, Aries with Libra and Leo with Aquarius.
- **A receptive rectangle** sits in earth and water signs: for example, Taurus with Scorpio and Virgo with Pisces.

This uniformity explains why the figure is seen as stable: all four planets speak related languages, and the oppositions only define what the person seeks balance between. If one of the planets stands at the edge of a neighbouring sign, the figure is out of sign and its polarity is mixed.

## Orbs for a rectangle

Each of the six sides must fit the orb of its aspect: oppositions and trines the usual 6-8°, sextiles 4-6°. The figure most often falls apart at the sextiles, since their margin is narrowest. As with other configurations, many astrologers use slightly tighter orbs for a rectangle than for single aspects: the errors of four planets add up, and a figure with wide orbs no longer looks like a rectangle on the wheel. General approaches are described on the [orbs](/en/aspects/orbs) page.

## How to read a mystic rectangle

A mystic rectangle is described as a figure of tension that finds a practical outlet. The two oppositions show two axes between which the person keeps balancing. The trines and sextiles around the edges show that the means for that balance are there: abilities, habits, people nearby. So the figure is often linked with a knack for working with contradictions and turning them into results rather than crises.

The order of reading:

- **Two axes.** Read each opposition separately: which planets sit at the ends, in which signs and houses. These are the two themes in which the person looks for a middle ground.
- **Trines.** The long sides show which ends of different axes support each other most easily. Through them the tension of one axis discharges into the other.
- **Sextiles.** The short sides describe opportunities that need a step: the link is there, but it has to be used.

The rectangle does not remove the tension of the oppositions, it only makes it manageable. If the luminaries or the chart angles take part, the figure is considered more prominent; the angles and the Moon require an exact birth time.

## A hypothetical example with degrees

Take a chart with Venus at 6° Taurus, Mars at 8° Scorpio, the Moon at 5° Pisces and Saturn at 9° Virgo.

- Venus and Mars are in opposition: orb 2°.
- The Moon and Saturn are in opposition: orb 4°.
- Venus sextiles the Moon (orb 1°) and trines Saturn (orb 3°).
- Mars trines the Moon (orb 3°) and sextiles Saturn (orb 1°).

All signs are earth or water: a receptive rectangle. The Venus-Mars axis describes tension between the wish for closeness and the wish to act on one's own terms, the Moon-Saturn axis between the need for warmth and the need for order. Trines and sextiles link all four planets, so in the traditional description such a person knows how to build relationships with both passion and stability, even if balancing between them is constant work.

## How to find a mystic rectangle in your own chart

Like the grand cross, the rectangle is found from the oppositions. List all oppositions in the chart and look for two whose ends stand about 60° and 120° apart. Then check the four soft aspects around the edges: two trines and two sextiles. All four within orb mean a rectangle.

A useful check by sign: in a classic figure all four planets sit in signs of one polarity, either only fire and air or only earth and water. If one planet breaks this rule, the figure is out of sign and should be read more cautiously. A rectangle is often visible on the chart wheel without any arithmetic: four lines around the edge, two long (trines) and two short (sextiles), and two diagonal oppositions.

## How the rectangle differs from related figures

The rectangle differs from the [grand cross](/en/aspects/patterns/grand-cross) in the angle between its oppositions and in its edges: trines and sextiles instead of four squares. It differs from the [kite](/en/aspects/patterns/kite) in containing no closed grand trine: a kite has one opposition and three trines, a rectangle two oppositions and two trines. And if two more planets are added to the rectangle at 120° and 300°, the result is a [grand sextile](/en/aspects/patterns/grand-sextile).
