# Trine aspect: the 120° angle in a birth chart

> What a trine means in astrology: the 120° angle, one element, orbs, out-of-sign trines, why it feels easy, where ease turns into a trap, and the grand trine.

A trine is an aspect between two points of a chart that stand 120° apart along the ecliptic. It is one of the five Ptolemaic aspects and is considered the most harmonious of them: planets in trine sit in signs of the same element and reinforce each other without effort. That lack of effort is exactly what makes the trine both the easiest aspect in a chart and the one its owner is least likely to notice.

## Geometry: why 120°

The ecliptic divides into three equal parts of 120°, each spanning four signs. In a classic trine the planets sit in signs with three other signs between them: Aries and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Gemini and Libra.

Three points placed 120° apart around a circle form an equilateral triangle. That is where the aspect gets its name, and where the larger figure comes from when all three corners are occupied by planets. A trine equals two sextiles in a row and falls between the [square](/en/aspects/square) (90°) and the opposition (180°). Most chart software draws it as a blue or green line.

## One element

The defining property of the trine is that its signs always share an element. Each element has three signs, and all three are in trine to one another:

- **Fire:** Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
- **Earth:** Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.
- **Air:** Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.
- **Water:** Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

The modalities, on the other hand, always differ. In every element one sign is cardinal, one fixed and one mutable. So the trine pairs the same nature with a different pace. Aries starts, Leo sustains, Sagittarius expands, but all three burn with the same fire. The square is built the other way round: shared modality, different elements. That explains the difference in how the two feel. In a square the planets get in each other's way; in a trine they understand each other without explanation.

## Why the trine feels easy

Planets in trine speak the same language, because their signs share both element and polarity. The functions they describe feed each other: what one planet does, the other carries on naturally. Someone with Venus trine Mars usually does not have to learn how to combine affection with action; the combination is there from the start.

Traditional astrology counted the trine among the benefic aspects, and modern astrologers call it soft. Both labels mean the same thing: a trine creates no inner conflict and does not ask the person to overcome anything in themselves.

## When ease becomes a trap

The other side of the same quality. What comes without effort often goes unnoticed as a talent, so it does not get developed. A trine works, but it works at the level where it started, and without a push from outside it can stay there.

A second point: a trine supplies no motivation. The tension of a square or opposition forces a person to look for a way out; a trine has nothing to look for. A chart with many trines and hardly any hard aspects describes someone to whom a lot comes easily but who does not always have a reason to use it. Astrologers often say the trine works best alongside a hard aspect: the square provides the reason to act, the trine the resources to carry it out.

A third point: a trine reinforces what is familiar. Two planets in the same element confirm each other, and a view from a different angle rarely enters the pair.

## The orb of a trine

The trine gets the same orb as the square and opposition, or slightly less: usually 6-7°, up to 9° with the Sun or Moon. A trine within 1° is considered very exact and stands out in the chart more than most other aspects. How schools differ on orbs is covered in the article on [aspect orbs](/en/aspects/orbs).

The AstroWay calculator sets the orb by the pair of planets, so the aspect table of every chart lists each trine with its actual orb.

## Out-of-sign trines

Sometimes two planets are close to 120° apart while their signs do not form a trine. A planet at 29° Aries and another at 1° Virgo are 122° apart, a trine by orb. But Aries is fire and Virgo is earth, and by sign they form a quincunx (150°).

This is called a dissociate or out-of-sign trine. Astrologers count it but read it more cautiously: the angle is there, the shared element is not, so the trine's main advantage, a common language for both planets, is missing too. The AstroWay aspect table lists it as an ordinary trine.

## Trines in synastry

In synastry, the comparison of two charts, a trine forms between a planet of one person and a planet of the other. The rules are the same: 120°, a shared element, an orb set by the pair of planets, although many astrologers keep synastry orbs a little tighter than natal ones.

A trine between charts is read as a place where two people find each other easy. If one person's Moon trines the other's Venus, neither has to explain at length what pleases them or what calms them down. Mercury trine Mercury describes a conversation in which each picks up the other's thought.

What was said about the trap of ease applies here as well. A couple whose charts connect only by trines feels comfortable, but little pushes them to grow. That is why synastry is read as a whole set of aspects: the trines show what the relationship can rest on, the squares and oppositions show where it will have to work.

## Example: the trine in Donald Trump's chart

In [Donald Trump's chart](/en/people/donald-trump) Jupiter is at 17°27′ Libra and Uranus at 17°53′ Gemini. The angle between them is 119°33′, an orb of 0°26′, which makes it the most exact aspect between planets. Jupiter is retrograde and almost stationary at the moment of birth, while Uranus moves forward, so the angle is slowly drifting away from an exact 120° and the aspect is separating. Libra and Gemini are both air signs, so this is a trine in the air element, with cardinal Libra and mutable Gemini.

How tradition reads the pair: Jupiter stands for growth, belief and scale, Uranus for sudden change, independence and breaking with the familiar. A trine between them describes an easy relationship with risk and with unexpected turns, a tendency to see a sharp change as a chance rather than a threat. The air element moves all of this into the realm of ideas, words and contacts. Jupiter's retrograde motion does not change the type of aspect.

This trine stands alone: there is no third planet to close it into a grand trine. In fact, Trump's chart has no T-square, grand trine or yod.

## The grand trine

When three planets occupy the three signs of one element and each is in trine to the other two, they form a grand trine. A hypothetical example: the Sun at 5° Taurus, the Moon at 8° Virgo and Saturn at 3° Capricorn make an earth grand trine. The figure amplifies everything said above: a lot of natural ability in one element and little inner drive. It is read together with the aspects that lead out of it.
