Mercury in a birth chart describes how you think, talk and learn: how you take in facts, put them into words and pass them on to others. In [astrocartography](/en/astrocartography) the question is where on the world map Mercury stood on one of the four angles at the moment of birth. Near such a line Mercury becomes angular in the relocated chart, and the mind, speech and everyday contacts move to the front of life in that place.

## Why Mercury lines follow the Sun lines

Mercury never moves more than about 28° from the Sun, so its lines always lie in the neighbourhood of the [Sun lines](/en/astrocartography/sun). The gap between the MC lines of two planets equals the gap between them in right ascension. If Mercury stood 5° of right ascension from the Sun, its MC line runs 5° of longitude away from the Sun's MC line: about 555 km at the equator and about 355 km at latitude 50°. When Mercury was within a degree or two of the Sun, the two lines nearly coincide, and the same strip of the map carries both themes.

The AC and DC curves depend on declination as well, and at high latitudes, where the curves bend steeply, a small difference in declination between Mercury and the Sun pulls them further apart than the MC lines are.

The tool in the app shows the lines within about 4° of the point you click. So when Mercury stood less than 4° of right ascension from the Sun, the tool shows the Sun's MC line next to Mercury's, and the reading has to account for two angular planets at once.

## Mercury on the Ascendant (AC line)

Along the AC line Mercury was rising at birth, and in the relocated chart it sits on the angle of the self. Here Mercury colours how you come across. Tradition describes this placement as talkative and quick to react: you are noticed for what you say and how fast you pick things up, and you find yourself asking, explaining and introducing people to each other more than elsewhere. A restless streak belongs to the same picture, a pull toward constant movement and fresh input.

After a move, this is a line where your own voice tends to become your calling card in daily life, in conversations with neighbours as much as at work. On a trip the effect is shorter and lighter: mental alertness, many chance conversations, days filled with errands, notes and plans. For a study trip or a language course the theme fits naturally, since it puts learning into the foreground of personal experience.

## Mercury on the Descendant (DC line)

On the DC line Mercury was setting at birth and stands on the Descendant of the relocated chart, the angle of partners. Mercury's themes then come through others rather than through your own manner. Tradition reads it as a place of counterparts who talk: negotiators, clients, colleagues, a partner who is quick or younger in spirit. Contracts, correspondence and the terms of cooperation take up more room than usual.

After relocation, life near this line often organises itself around dialogue. Much of what happens begins with someone else's question, offer or proposal, and partnerships are built on an exchange of ideas. On a trip the line tends to show up as meetings: the journey is remembered for the people you talked to and what was agreed. In both cases you are less the source of information than its counterpart, listening, answering and negotiating.

## Mercury on the MC (MC line)

On the MC line Mercury was culminating at birth, and in the relocated chart it stands at the Midheaven, the angle of work and reputation. Tradition links Mercury here with occupations of the word and of exchange: writing, teaching, journalism, translation, trade, logistics, any work where you are known for what you say, sell or explain. The public image becomes that of someone who informs, comments or mediates.

For a move this line matters most when the work already runs on communication, because the career angle and the planet of communication coincide. A business trip near the MC line usually has a practical agenda: presentations, interviews, a publication, contacts that matter for work.

## Mercury on the IC (IC line)

The IC is the angle of home, family, roots and private life, so Mercury turns inward here. Tradition describes a home full of books, talk and comings and goings, work done from home, long family conversations, or a new interest in family history and the language of your origins.

Relocation to this line moves thinking and communication into the private sphere. The house becomes a study, a workshop or a place where people gather to talk, while public life stays quieter. On a trip the IC line is less visible from the outside: it shows in where you stay and with whom, in conversations with hosts, relatives or old acquaintances, and in time spent reading or writing indoors rather than out in the city.

## Mercury lines and other planets

Because Mercury lines run so close to the Sun lines, the most common combination for Mercury is not a crossing but a parallel band where both planets sit on the same angle. It reads much like a [conjunction](/en/aspects/conjunction) placed on an angle: your sense of purpose and your way of thinking show up together.

Where a Mercury line meets a line of another planet, for instance Mercury's MC line and the AC line of [Jupiter](/en/astrocartography/jupiter), the crossing is a [paran](/en/astrocartography#parans).

## What to check in the natal chart first

An angular Mercury amplifies what the natal Mercury already is. Before reading any Mercury line, look at its house and its [aspects](/en/aspects) in the birth chart. A Mercury tightly bound to Saturn brings that seriousness and caution onto the angle as well; a Mercury close to [Venus](/en/astrocartography/venus) softens the tone of every line it forms.

Then check the [birth time](/en/astrocartography#birth-time). An error of ten or fifteen minutes moves the whole map by 2.5-3.75°, roughly 175-265 km at latitude 50°. The distance between the Mercury and Sun lines stays the same, but that is enough to mistake which of the two neighbouring lines, Mercury's or the Sun's, a city lies on.
