## What is known and what is not

The date and city are confirmed by Wikidata, which names the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and by Andrew Gimson's biography "Boris: The Rise of Boris Johnson", which opens by saying that Boris was born to British parents in New York City on June 19, 1964. The Guardian reported in 2017 that he was born in New York while his parents worked there and held US citizenship by birth, which he renounced in 2016. His full name is Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson. His father's memoir "Stanley I Presume?" places the birth "in the New York Hospital", which stood on East 68th Street; the coordinates are those of the Upper East Side neighbourhood centre, about a kilometre away, which does not change the chart.

The time comes from his father. The day after the birth Stanley Johnson typed a letter to Boris Litwin, a White Russian the parents had met in Mexico City and after whom they named their son. The letter says the boy "was born at 2.00 p.m. yesterday". Gimson quotes it on p. 3 of the biography, and the passage turns up in a full-text search of three editions of the book through Open Library. Astro-Databank rates the time A on the same basis. Astrotheme gives the same time but rates it B with the source given as "Biography". Under our rules the father's own words, written the day after the birth, are a family source, so the [Rodden rating](/en/methodology#rodden) is A. We found no other sourced version of the time.

The chart is cast for 2:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC-4), which New York observed in June 1964.

## Libra rising and the Moon in the 1st house

The Ascendant is at 11°06′ Libra and the MC at 12°54′ Cancer. The Moon at 0°35′ Scorpio is in the 1st house. The Moon had only just entered Scorpio, so a birth a little over an hour earlier would leave it in Libra, and its sign here depends on how exact the "2.00 p.m." of the letter is.

Tradition links a Libra Ascendant with charm, a diplomatic manner and a wish to be liked, and a Scorpio Moon in the 1st house with strong feelings that are not always shown but that others sense anyway. The MC lies within 0°41′ of [Sirius](/en/fixed-stars/sirius), the brightest star in the sky. Classical astrology associates Sirius at the top of the chart with honour, public life and fame.

## Gemini in the 9th house and Betelgeuse

The Sun at 28°27′ Gemini, Venus at 28°45′ Gemini, Mercury at 19°19′ Gemini and Mars at 1°36′ Gemini form a [stellium](/en/aspects/patterns/stellium). The Sun, Mercury and Venus are in the 9th house, Mars in the 8th. The Sun and a retrograde Venus form a [conjunction](/en/aspects/conjunction) with an orb of 0°18′.

Tradition connects Gemini with words, quick reactions and curiosity about everything at once, and the 9th house with long journeys, education, beliefs and the printed word. Both planets of the conjunction sit on the fixed star [Betelgeuse](/en/fixed-stars/betelgeuse): the Sun within 0°11′, Venus within 0°30′. Betelgeuse, the shoulder of Orion, is linked in the tradition with success and martial honours.

## A mutable T-square with Mars at the apex

A retrograde Saturn at 5°01′ Pisces in the 5th house is in [opposition](/en/aspects/opposition) to Uranus at 6°31′ Virgo in the 11th, orb 1°30′. Mars squares Saturn with an orb of 3°24′ and squares Uranus with an orb of 4°54′. All three bodies are in mutable signs, so this is a [T-square](/en/aspects/patterns/t-square) with Mars at the apex in the 8th house.

Astrologers read the Saturn-Uranus opposition as tension between order and the urge to break the rules. The mutable cross adds flexibility and a tendency to change course on the move, and Mars at the apex shows where the tension goes: into action, argument and risk.

## Jupiter opposite Neptune

Jupiter at 15°44′ Taurus in the 8th house opposes a retrograde Neptune at 15°24′ Scorpio in the 2nd, orb 0°19′. Tradition ties the axis of the 2nd and 8th houses to one's own and shared resources, and the Jupiter-Neptune opposition to large hopes and broad plans whose limits are hard to define.
