Birth data: 1984-01-08, unknown, North Korea (city unconfirmed); Rodden rating XX.

Kim Jong Un's chart is among the least certain in this reference: the time, the city and even the year of birth are in question. Below we explain why we cast it for January 8, 1984, and what in it can still be relied on.

## What is known and what is not

All versions agree on the day, January 8, yet North Korea has never officially confirmed even that, as Reuters noted in 2024. The year has three versions:

- 1984: the US Treasury OFAC sanctions list of July 6, 2016, and the South Korean government's conclusion, reported by Dong-A Ilbo on February 2, 2012;
- 1982: the year given by North Korean state media (ABC News, 2018). It is seen as symbolic, 70 years after Kim Il Sung's birth and 40 after Kim Jong Il's official birth year;
- 1983: the year earlier cited by South Korean intelligence officials and some experts (SoraNews24, drawing on Business Insider, 2016).

We use 1984 because two independent official sources, one American and one South Korean, stand behind it.

North Korea does not state the city of birth. Wikidata gives Wonsan as its preferred version, while astrology databases use Pyongyang without a source. The profile uses Pyongyang's coordinates as a placeholder, which without a birth time do not affect the chart.

Since the date itself is uncertain, the [Rodden rating](/en/methodology#rodden) is XX. There is no birth time, so the chart is cast for 12:00 Pyongyang time (UTC+9), with no houses, Ascendant or MC. The Moon stays in Pisces for the whole of January 8, 1984, so its sign, Pisces, does not depend on the time. We give neither its degree nor its aspects.

## What in the chart is reliable

Another year gives another chart: Jupiter, Saturn and above all Mars move far in two years. The Sun stays almost the same, because on January 8 it sits at roughly the same degree of Capricorn every year, and the slowest planets shift by only a few degrees. Everything said below about the planets holds only for the 1984 version.

## Sun in Capricorn, sextile Saturn

The Sun is at 17°00′ Capricorn. Saturn at 14°30′ Scorpio makes a [sextile](/en/aspects/sextile) to it with an orb of 2°29′. In tradition Capricorn is tied to hierarchy, structure and the long view, and Saturn is its ruler, so the Sun's aspect to Saturn reinforces the theme of the sign.

## Sagittarius: Venus, Uranus, Jupiter and Neptune

Four bodies in Sagittarius form two pairs. Venus at 8°29′ Sagittarius is conjunct Uranus at 11°31′ Sagittarius, orb 3°01′. Jupiter at 27°29′ Sagittarius is conjunct Neptune at 29°36′ Sagittarius, orb 2°06′.

A retrograde Mercury at 1°02′ Capricorn is already across the sign boundary but close to this pair by degree: it is conjunct Neptune with an orb of 1°25′ and Jupiter with an orb of 3°32′.

The Jupiter-Neptune conjunction comes round roughly every 13 years and lasts several months, so it is present in the charts of everyone born in the winter of 1983-1984. Tradition links it with broad ideas and faith in them. Mercury, attached to the pair, is what makes it personal.

Uranus also opposes the North Node at 15°26′ Gemini, with an orb of 3°54′ between Uranus and the Node.

## Mars and Pluto on the Libra-Scorpio boundary

Mars at 28°26′ Libra and Pluto at 1°54′ Scorpio form a [conjunction](/en/aspects/conjunction) with an orb of 3°28′, again across a sign boundary. Mars is also sextile Jupiter with an orb of 0°56′ and sextile Neptune with an orb of 1°10′, while Mercury is sextile Pluto with an orb of 0°52′.

Tradition reads a Mars-Pluto conjunction as concentrated will and intensity of action. The sextiles from Mars to Jupiter and Neptune tie this group to the Sagittarius stellium, so the chart rests on two groups: Sagittarius and the Libra-Scorpio boundary.
