Andriy Shevchenko birth chart: a birth time without a source

Updated Markdown

Ukrainian footballer, 2004 Ballon d'Or winner, former Ukraine coach and president of the Ukrainian Association of Football. The only birth time comes from an Italian astrologer's list that does not say where it came from, so the chart is cast for noon.

  • 22:35: The time from the list of the Italian astrologer Luigi Stocchi (city given as Kyiv), with no stated origin; Astrotheme repeats it. No quote from Shevchenko or his family was found. Cancer ascendant. (Luigi Stocchi: Carte astrali (archive, 2008))
  • 10:35: The time in Astro-Databank, which cites the same Stocchi but puts it in the morning instead of the evening; most likely a transcription error. Scorpio ascendant. (Astro-Databank: Shevchenko, Andriy)

Andriy Shevchenko was born on September 29, 1976, in the village of Dvirkivshchyna near Yahotyn in the Kyiv region. He played 111 matches for Ukraine, scored 48 goals and later coached the national side. There is no reliable birth time, so the chart is cast for noon. Its notable features are three planets in Libra, Mars on the fixed stars Spica and Arcturus, and a near-exact conjunction of Venus with the North Node in Scorpio.

What is known and what is not

Every source agrees on the date: the official biography of the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF), Wikidata, a 2009 report by Ukrainskyi Tyzhden from his parents' village, and the astrology databases all give it.

Ukrainskyi Tyzhden reported from Dvirkivshchyna, where both of his parents come from: the magazine says he was born there, and his mother says he lived in the village until he was three, when the family moved to Kyiv. The UAF biography and Wikidata give Yahotyn as the birthplace. Dvirkivshchyna lies about 7 km east of Yahotyn, so both may be right if he was born in the district maternity ward and the family lived in the village, though no source says so. We use the coordinates of Dvirkivshchyna, the family's village; at noon a few kilometres change nothing. The astrology databases say Kyiv, which no Ukrainian source supports.

The birth time comes from one place: a list of charts by the Italian astrologer Luigi Stocchi, archived in 2008. It reads Kyiv, September 29, 1976, 22:35, with no origin given for the time. Astrotheme repeats 22:35 and credits Stocchi. Astro-Databank cites the same Stocchi through the collector Lepoivre but gives 10:35 in the morning, most likely a copying error rather than a separate testimony. Both databases rate the data A, yet neither they nor any other source quotes Shevchenko or his family. Our method needs such a quote for A, so the Rodden rating here is C. Both versions are listed above: 22:35 gives a Cancer Ascendant, 10:35 a Scorpio one.

The chart is cast for 12:00 Moscow Time (UTC+3), which Ukraine kept in September 1976; the USSR had not yet introduced summer time. The chart has no houses, Ascendant or MC. The Moon covers about 14° in a day, so its degree and aspects are left out. Its sign is known, because the Moon stayed in Sagittarius for the whole day. The methodology explains how such charts are read.

A stellium in Libra

The Sun at 6°20′ Libra, Pluto at 11°23′ Libra and Mars at 23°37′ Libra form a stellium. Tradition links Libra with a sense of balance, partnership and acting in concert with others. Mars is in its detriment in this sign in the classical scheme, so its force works through interplay rather than a head-on push. Pluto next to the Sun, in the modern reading, adds intensity and a will to transform.

The Sun also makes a semisextile to Uranus at 5°34′ Scorpio, orb 0°46′.

Mars on Spica and Arcturus

Mars at 23°37′ Libra sits almost exactly on two fixed stars: Spica is 0°07′ away and Arcturus 0°16′. Spica, the ear of wheat in the Virgin's hand, is linked with gifts and success, and Arcturus with pioneering and the ability to lead. Tradition holds that such a star amplifies the planet it touches, here Mars, the planet of action and competition.

Venus, Uranus and the Node in Scorpio

The tightest aspect in the chart is the conjunction of Venus at 3°54′ Scorpio and the North Node at 3°50′ Scorpio, orb 0°04′. Uranus at 5°34′ Scorpio is conjunct Venus with an orb of 1°39′ and the Node with an orb of 1°44′.

Opposite this group, at 0°38′ Taurus, stands retrograde Chiron. It is in opposition to the Node with an orb of 3°11′, to Venus with an orb of 3°16′ and to Uranus with an orb of 4°55′.

Venus in Scorpio is classically in detriment: feelings run deep and loyal. Uranus beside it adds sudden turns and a need for freedom. Astrologers read a conjunction with the North Node as a theme that recurs in life and pulls forward, and the opposition to Chiron sets the theme of vulnerability across from it.
