Updated Markdown

Vice President of the United States since 2025. The 8:11 a.m. time is on his birth certificate, a scan of which is public, so the chart is rated AA and has houses.

JD Vance was born on August 2, 1984, at 8:11 a.m. in Middletown, Ohio. The time comes from a document, so the chart has houses and angles. The features that stand out are a Leo Ascendant with the Sun and Venus in the 12th house, and a tight square from the Sun to Saturn.

What is known and what is not

The date and town are confirmed by the official White House biography, which says he was born and raised in Middletown, and by Wikidata, Astro-Databank and Astrotheme.

The time of 8:11 a.m. is on his Ohio certificate of live birth, a scan of which is published on Wikimedia Commons. It also names the hospital, Middletown Regional Hospital in Butler County. Astro-Databank holds the same image from the collector Sy Scholfield, and Astrotheme gives the same time from the same source. The certificate is in the name of James David Hamel. Vance wrote in "Hillbilly Elegy" that he was born James Donald Bowman, that his name was changed after his stepfather Bob Hamel adopted him, and that he later took his grandparents' surname, Vance. The published scan is therefore the certificate as reissued after the adoption; the date, hour and hospital are presumably carried over from the original record. A document whose copy is public earns the top Rodden rating, AA. We found no other versions of the time.

The coordinates are those of the hospital rather than the town centre. The chart is cast for 8:11 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC-4), which Ohio kept in August 1984.

Leo rising, with the Sun and Venus in the 12th house

The Ascendant is at 27°46′ Leo and the MC at 22°03′ Taurus. The Sun at 10°22′ Leo and Venus at 23°27′ Leo are in the 12th house, above the horizon but not yet at the Ascendant. Mercury at 7°31′ Virgo is already in the 1st house.

Tradition links a Leo Ascendant with a visible, confident manner. The 12th house classically describes what happens behind the scenes: the private, the hidden, the preparatory. Astrologers read the Sun there as strength that matures for a long time out of public view. Mercury in Virgo is in its own sign and in the 1st house, which the classic reading takes as precise, analytical thinking built into the way a person presents himself.

The Sun between Saturn and Uranus

The Sun is in square to Saturn at 10°01′ Scorpio with an orb of 0°20′. Saturn is in the 3rd house, the house of language, learning and the immediate surroundings. At the same time the Sun is in trine to Uranus at 9°38′ Sagittarius with an orb of 0°43′, and Uranus is in the 4th house, the house of family and origins. Saturn and Uranus are linked by a semisextile with an orb of 0°23′, so all three bodies sit on nearly the same degree of their signs.

Tradition reads the Sun-Saturn square as the pressure of duty and responsibility felt early in life. The Sun's trine to Uranus adds a capacity for sharp turns and for breaking with the expected script. Modern astrology connects Uranus in the 4th house with an unsettled home and family.

Venus square Mars

Venus in Leo in the 12th house and Mars at 22°32′ Scorpio in the 4th house form a square with an orb of 0°55′. Both planets are in fixed signs. Astrologers read this aspect as strong, not always peaceful feelings and a passion that tests relationships. Mars in Scorpio, traditionally one of its own signs, sharpens the tension.

Mercury and Chiron

The tightest aspect in the chart is Mercury square Chiron at 7°34′ Gemini, orb 0°03′. Chiron is in the 10th house near the North Node at 4°10′ Gemini, and the Node is conjunct Chiron with an orb of 3°24′. Mercury also squares Uranus with an orb of 2°06′.

In modern astrology Chiron marks a wound that grows into the ability to teach others. Tradition links its square to Mercury with personal experience becoming material for words, writing and public speech. Among the minor aspects the tightest is the biquintile of the Sun to Jupiter with an orb of 0°05′, an angle associated with talent and a personal style.
