Narendra Modi birth chart: date known, time disputed
Prime Minister of India since 2014. The date of birth is official, but the versions of the time contradict each other, so the chart is cast for noon and rated DD.

Narendra Modi was born with the Sun in Virgo, where four bodies of the chart gathered. There is no reliable birth time, so what follows covers only what does not depend on it.
What is known and what is not
The official date of birth is September 17, 1950. The profile on the Prime Minister's Office website gives it but names only "a small town in Gujarat". Gulf News and Wikidata name Vadnagar, in Mehsana district. In 1950 the area was part of Bombay State; today it is Gujarat.
Even the date has had a rival. In 2016 the opposition Indian National Congress pointed to a register at MN College in Visnagar that gives August 29, 1949, as The News Minute reported. We use the official date from the Prime Minister's Office profile.
The time is harder. Four versions circulate, and none rests on a document:
- 9:35: reportedly from his elder brother Amrit Modi, relayed in 2014 through two intermediaries, with no direct quote (Astro-Databank);
- 10:00: the Vedic site GaneshaSpeaks, marked by the site itself as unconfirmed;
- 11:00: the most widespread version in Indian sources, from the book Lagna Phal, which uses Mehsana (AstroSage);
- 12:09: a version from the astrologer K. N. Rao, source unknown (Astro-Databank).
For Vadnagar, 9:35, 10:00 and 11:00 give a Scorpio Ascendant, and 12:09 gives Sagittarius. Conflicting, unverified data of this kind carries the Rodden rating DD. So we cast the chart for 12:00 Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30), with no houses, Ascendant or MC.
On September 17, 1950 the Moon moved from Scorpio into Sagittarius, so the Moon sign is unknown, and we give neither its degree nor its aspects. Indian sources also use the sidereal zodiac, AstroWay the tropical one, so their signs differ from ours.
Four bodies in Virgo
The Sun at 23°48′ Virgo and a retrograde Mercury at 23°54′ Virgo form a conjunction with an orb of 0°06′. Saturn at 22°49′ Virgo is right beside them: it is conjunct the Sun with an orb of 0°58′ and conjunct Mercury with an orb of 1°05′. Venus at 8°54′ Virgo completes the picture, giving a four-body stellium in Virgo.
In tradition Virgo is the sign of order, detail and daily work. Mercury is in its own sign in Virgo, one of the classical dignities. Astrologers read Saturn on the Sun as discipline, a sense of duty and a readiness to take the long road to a goal. Their conjunction holds through the whole day, so it does not depend on the birth time.
Mars in Scorpio by sextile
Mars at 24°07′ Scorpio makes a sextile to the whole Virgo group: to the Sun with an orb of 0°19′, to Mercury with an orb of 0°13′ and to Saturn with an orb of 1°18′. Scorpio is one of the two signs that Mars rules in the tradition, so the planet is at home here.
Tradition treats a sextile as an opportunity that has to be taken up, and in the classic reading this Mars adds persistence to Virgo's discipline.
The Nodes and Jupiter on the edge of a sign
The North Node at 28°22′ Pisces stands almost opposite the Sun: the Sun's opposition to the Node has an orb of 4°34′, and Mercury's opposition to the Node an orb of 4°28′. Jupiter at 29°45′ Aquarius, retrograde, sits on the last degree of its sign. Venus at 8°54′ Virgo sextiles Uranus at 9°07′ Cancer with an orb of 0°13′, one of the closest aspects in the chart.
The generational background
The tightest aspect in the chart does not belong to Modi personally. Neptune at 16°13′ Libra is sextile Chiron at 16°16′ Sagittarius with an orb of 0°02′, and Pluto at 18°54′ Leo trines Chiron with an orb of 2°38′. Slow bodies hold such angles for months, so everyone born that autumn shares them, and tradition reads them as a generational background.
