  • 09:30: From a 2000 email by the webmaster of an unofficial Putin website to the astrologer Matthew Quellas, citing a Soviet birth certificate. No copy has been published, and correspondents of Astro-Databank dispute that Soviet birth records contained a time. The most common version in astrology databases. Scorpio ascendant, about 3°. (Astro-Databank: Putin, Vladimir)
  • 13:00: Boris Izraitel's version as passed on by Richard Nolle: Putin supposedly gave the time in a private conversation with a reporter, who passed it to an acquaintance. The chain is indirect. Sagittarius ascendant, about 6°. (Astro-Databank: Putin, Vladimir)
  • 16:10: A rectification by the astrologer J. Weiss (Astrologie Heute no. 83, 2000), quoted by Sergey Smelyakov. Worked back from events, not a source. Capricorn ascendant, about 17°. (Astro-Databank: Putin, Vladimir)
  • 16:35: A rectification by the astrologer Marc Penfield. Capricorn ascendant, about 27°. (Astro-Databank: Putin, Vladimir)
  • 09:35: A rectification by the astrologer Starkman (09:35:52), a refinement of the 09:30 version. Scorpio ascendant, about 4°. (Astro-Databank: Putin, Vladimir)
  • 02:47: A rectification by Mikhael Borisovich (2001), who considered the birth-certificate version doubtful. Ascendant at the very start of Virgo. (Astro-Databank: Putin, Vladimir)
CheckedOctober 20, 2026

Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). There are six versions of his birth time, and none rests on a document that can be checked, so the chart is cast for noon. What stands out in it does not depend on the hour: four planets in Libra, and Mercury on two bright fixed stars.

What is known and what is not

The date and city are given by the biography on his personal website on the Kremlin domain (archive copy from 2019), the US Treasury OFAC sanctions list and Wikidata. The Snegiryov Maternity Hospital, near the family flat, is named by the Austrian magazine News and by Wikidata, and the coordinates are taken from it. Astro-Databank also notes a claim that he was born in 1950 in Metekhi, Georgia. We found no verifiable source for it, so the profile follows the date and city confirmed by the Kremlin biography and the other sources.

The time versions are:

  • 9:30 a.m.: in a 2000 email, the webmaster of an unofficial Putin website told the astrologer Matthew Quellas that the time came from a Soviet birth certificate. No copy has been published, and correspondents of Astro-Databank dispute that Soviet birth records contained a time. This is the most common version in astrology databases, and it gives a Scorpio Ascendant;
  • 1:00 p.m.: Boris Izraitel's version as passed on by Richard Nolle, supposedly from a private conversation between Putin and a reporter, relayed through a third person. Sagittarius Ascendant;
  • 4:10 p.m., 4:35 p.m., 9:35 a.m. and 2:47 a.m.: rectifications by the astrologers J. Weiss, Marc Penfield, Starkman and Mikhael Borisovich. A rectification is worked back from life events, not a source. These versions put the Ascendant in Capricorn, in Scorpio or at the very start of Virgo.

The versions disagree on both the time and the rising sign, and four of the six are rectifications, so the Rodden rating is DD: conflicting and unverified. Astro-Databank and Astrotheme rate the data the same way.

The chart is cast for 12:00 noon Moscow time (UTC+3). It has no houses, no Ascendant and no MC (why). Even the Moon's sign is unknown: that day the Moon moved from Taurus into Gemini, and which sign it was in at birth depends on the time. We therefore give neither its degree nor its sign nor its aspects.

The reading below treats this chart like every other profile. We do not use it to explain the person's decisions or actions.

A stellium in Libra

The Sun at 14°01′ Libra, Saturn at 17°28′ Libra, Neptune at 21°10′ Libra and Mercury at 23°20′ Libra form a stellium. The Sun is conjunct Saturn with an orb of 3°26′, Saturn conjunct Neptune with an orb of 3°41′, and Mercury conjunct Neptune with an orb of 2°10′. In the classical scheme Saturn is exalted in Libra.

Tradition links Libra with balance, negotiation and relations with others, and reads Saturn next to the Sun as restraint, discipline and slow, structured effort. Modern astrologers associate Neptune in the same group with intuition, ideals and what is hard to define clearly.

Mercury on Spica and Arcturus

Mercury at 23°20′ Libra sits on two fixed stars at once: 0°10′ from Spica and 0°12′ from Arcturus. Ptolemy gave Spica the nature of Venus with a little Mars, and Arcturus the nature of Mars and Jupiter. On Mercury these meanings fall on thought and speech.

Mercury also makes a sextile to Pluto at 22°43′ Leo with an orb of 0°37′. Tradition reads the contact as depth and persistence of thought.

Saturn square Uranus

Saturn at 17°28′ Libra squares Uranus at 18°23′ Cancer with an orb of 0°55′. The Sun also squares Uranus, with an orb of 4°22′. Libra and Cancer belong to the cardinal cross. Astrologers read a Saturn-Uranus square as tension between order and change, between keeping a structure and renewing it (more in the article on the square aspect).

The tightest aspect in the chart is also a square: Jupiter at 19°44′ Taurus to the North Node at 19°58′ Aquarius, with an orb of 0°14′.
