Gavin Newsom was born on October 10, 1967, in San Francisco at 5:13 a.m. Two things stand out in his chart: an almost exact square between the Sun and the Moon, and a Virgo Ascendant with Pluto, Uranus and Venus gathered in that sign.
What is known and what is not
The date and place are confirmed by independent sources. CNN Editorial Research gives October 10, 1967, San Francisco and his birth name, Gavin Christopher Newsom. The official biography on the governor's website gives the year and the city, and Wikidata gives the same date and place. No public source names the hospital.
The time of 5:13 a.m. appears in two databases. Astrotheme cites a birth certificate or birth record contributed by the collector Pat Taglilatelo. Astro-Databank gives the same time, with the note that the astrologer Jack Fertig quotes the birth certificate. No copy of the certificate is public: none has been published, and the California Birth Index carries no time. We therefore give a Rodden rating of AA*, a birth record held by a data collector. We found no other version of the time.
The coordinates are those of the city centre, at San Francisco City Hall, because the hospital is unknown. We cast the chart for 5:13 Pacific Daylight Time (UTC-7): in 1967 daylight time in California ran until October 29. The resulting Ascendant at 21°13′ Virgo is within a minute of arc of the one given by Astro-Databank and Astrotheme.
A Sun-Moon square
The Sun at 16°30′ Libra is in the 1st house, the Moon at 16°31′ Capricorn is in the 4th, and they form a square with an orb of 0°01′, the tightest aspect in the chart. The Moon is exactly a quarter of the circle ahead of the Sun, so this is a first-quarter Moon birth.
Both lights are in cardinal signs. Tradition links a Sun-Moon square with friction between the person one wants to be in public and what one needs at home. Here the axis runs from the 1st house, the house of the self, to the 4th, the house of family and roots. Astrologers read a Capricorn Moon as reserved feeling that sets high standards for itself, and a Libra Sun as a drive toward agreement and balance.
Virgo rising: Pluto, Uranus and Venus
The Ascendant is at 21°13′ Virgo, and Pluto at 21°23′ Virgo is ten minutes of arc from it. Uranus at 26°11′ Virgo is also in the 1st house, and Venus at 4°28′ Virgo is in the 12th. Three bodies in one sign make a stellium in Virgo. Uranus and Pluto form a conjunction with an orb of 4°48′. This generational conjunction becomes personal here through its place on the Ascendant.
Uranus also makes an opposition to a retrograde Chiron at 26°40′ Pisces in the 7th house, with an orb of 0°28′ between Uranus and Chiron. The axis falls almost exactly on the 1st-7th house axis, the axis of self and others.
Tradition links Pluto on the Ascendant with an intensity that others sense at once and with a wish to transform whatever one takes on. Virgo rising describes a careful, detail-minded way of working.
Mars near the IC, square Pluto
Mars at 20°53′ Sagittarius sits in the 4th house, less than a degree from the IC, the lowest point of the chart. Mars and Pluto form a square with an orb of 0°29′. Since Pluto sits on the Ascendant, Mars is also in a near-exact square to the Ascendant.
Classical astrology reads a Mars-Pluto square as strong drive, push and reluctance to back down. In Sagittarius it is coloured by conviction: action follows belief in a goal. Mars in the 4th house is traditionally linked with action that grows from one's own base, home town or family circle.
Jupiter on Regulus
Jupiter at 28°28′ Leo in the 12th house sits 0°54′ from the fixed star Regulus. Tradition associates Regulus, the "heart of the Lion", with success, authority and public recognition, on the condition that dignity is kept. Jupiter makes a trine to the North Node at 28°00′ Aries with an orb of 0°27′ between Jupiter and the Node, a fire trine that ties Regulus to the nodal axis.
