Barack Obama's chart is one of the few charts of a politician where the birth time comes straight from a published document. It is recognisable by its Aquarius Ascendant, two retrograde planets in the 12th house and a crowded 7th house.
What is known and what is not
Obama was born on August 4, 1961, at Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. On April 27, 2011 the White House published a certified copy of the long-form Hawaii certificate of live birth, together with its correspondence with the state Department of Health. The hour field reads 7:24 p.m. NBC News and other outlets reported the same time that day.
A document with the birth time earns the highest Rodden rating, AA. We cast the chart for 7:24 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (UTC−10): Hawaii did not observe daylight saving time then and does not now. The sources give no other birth time, so there is nothing to dispute here.
Aquarius rising and the 12th house
The Ascendant is at 18°05′ Aquarius. Saturn, the traditional ruler of this sign, sits in the 12th house just behind the Ascendant at 25°19′ Capricorn, and Jupiter at 0°51′ Aquarius shares the house with it. Both are retrograde. In the classic reading the 12th house covers what happens behind the scenes: preparation, withdrawal, work that is not visible from outside. Astrologers associate Saturn in the 12th, in its own sign, with reserve and a habit of weighing a move before making it in public.
Chiron is in the 1st house at 5°19′ Pisces, also retrograde. Tradition ties this point to vulnerability that turns into experience.
Sun and Mercury in Leo
The Sun at 12°32′ Leo and Mercury at 2°19′ Leo are in the 6th house, the house of daily work and duties. Leo faces the Aquarius Ascendant across the zodiac: the two signs form one axis, and that axis runs through the whole chart.
Mercury in Leo is in opposition to Jupiter in Aquarius, orb 1°28′. Tradition links a Mercury-Jupiter opposition with speech aimed at a large audience and a pull toward big ideas. The Moon at 3°21′ Gemini in the 4th house connects both ends of the opposition: it is sextile Mercury (orb 1°01′) and trine Jupiter (orb 2°29′). When a third planet supports both poles of an opposition this way, the tension between them is traditionally read as manageable, the opposites finding a shared outlet. The article on the opposition explains how the 180° angle itself works.
A crowded 7th house
Four bodies occupy the 7th house: Uranus at 25°16′ Leo, the North Node at 27°18′ Leo, Pluto at 6°58′ Virgo and Mars at 22°34′ Virgo. The 7th house describes partners, alliances and open opponents, everyone a person meets face to face. Astrologers read the Uranus-North Node conjunction (orb 2°02′) as openness to sudden turns that come through other people.
Mars in Virgo is trine Saturn in Capricorn, orb 2°45′. Both planets are in earth signs, and tradition connects a trine between them with stamina and methodical work over a long distance.
Sun square Neptune
The Sun in Leo is square Neptune at 8°36′ Scorpio in the 9th house, orb 3°56′. The 9th house stands for worldview, ideas, distant countries and anything beyond a person's usual circle. A Sun-Neptune square is traditionally read as tension between a person's own image and the ideal that they, or the people around them, project onto it. The general principles of this angle are covered in the article on the square.
