Valerii Zaluzhnyi was born on July 8, 1973, in Novohrad-Volynskyi in the Zhytomyr region, a town since renamed Zviahel. He commanded the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2021-2024, holds the title Hero of Ukraine and has been ambassador to the United Kingdom since 2024. His birth time is not known, so the chart is cast for noon. Its tightest aspect links Venus and Jupiter, and the Sun in Cancer squares both ends of a Uranus-Chiron opposition.
What is known and what is not
The date and town are given by the hometown newspaper Zvyagel in a 2010 profile (which says he was born into a workers' family), the LB.ua dossier, Wikidata and Astrotheme. BBC News Ukrainian confirms the place of birth. The maternity hospital is not known, so the coordinates are those of the centre of Zviahel.
Neither the biographical dossiers nor the hometown interview give an hour of birth. Astrotheme marks the time as unknown, and Astro-Databank has no page for him. We found no other versions, so the chart carries Rodden rating X: time unknown.
The chart is cast for 12:00 Moscow Time (UTC+3), which the Ukrainian SSR kept in July 1973. The USSR had no summer time yet; it was introduced in 1981. There are no houses, Ascendant or MC, as the section on unknown birth times explains.
The Moon is harder than usual. On the morning of July 8, 1973, it was in late Libra, and later that day it moved into Scorpio. Without a time its sign cannot be settled: it is either late Libra or early Scorpio. We give neither its degree nor its aspects.
Venus opposite Jupiter
The tightest aspect of the chart is Venus at 9°44′ Leo opposite Jupiter at 9°54′ Aquarius, orb 0°10′. Jupiter is retrograde here. Tradition links the Leo-Aquarius axis with a tension between the personal and the collective: one's own dignity and loyalty to a shared cause. Astrologers read an opposition as a need to keep balancing two poles.
Mars at 11°07′ Aries connects both ends of this axis. Mars trines Venus with an orb of 1°23′ and sextiles Jupiter with an orb of 1°13′. Mars in Aries is in its own sign, where classical astrology counts it strong. In the traditional reading, easy aspects from Mars to both ends of an opposition give the tension an outlet through action and resolve. The article on the sextile covers how this aspect works.
Sun in Cancer and the cardinal squares
The Sun is at 16°03′ Cancer. Uranus at 18°59′ Libra and Chiron at 20°47′ Aries form an opposition with an orb of 1°47′. The Sun squares Uranus with an orb of 2°56′ and squares Chiron with an orb of 4°44′. If Chiron is counted, this is a cardinal T-square with the Sun at the apex. Not every astrologer builds patterns on Chiron, so the profile's pattern list leaves it out. The Sun has one more square, to Mars, with an orb of 4°55′.
Astrologers connect the cardinal signs with initiative and a readiness to be the first to act. Cancer traditionally stands for home, family line and protecting one's own, and the squares to Uranus and Chiron are read as tension between that wish for a firm base and sudden changes that have to be accepted. Mars also squares the North Node at 7°38′ Capricorn (orb 3°29′), which adds to the cardinal emphasis.
Mercury in Leo
Mercury at 3°14′ Leo was retrograde on the day of birth. It sextiles Pluto at 1°51′ Libra with an orb of 1°22′ and trines Neptune at 5°03′ Sagittarius with an orb of 1°49′. Neptune and Pluto are linked by a sextile as well (orb 3°11′), so Mercury closes a harmonious figure with the slow planets.
Tradition associates a retrograde Mercury with thinking that returns to ground already covered, checking and reconsidering it. Astrologers read Mercury's trine to Neptune in fire signs as imagination and a sense of the whole picture, and the sextile to Pluto as a habit of getting to the core of things. More on the trine in the article on this aspect.
